about

Solo instrumentals performed on piccolo bass to close out 2020 in the name of truth, beauty, love, and transcendence -- you know, all the stuff they hate. Loosely based on Homer's "The Odyssey," but can be enjoyed without knowing the backstory. Listeners frequently describe HB3's solo piccolo music as hypnotic and mesmerizing, even psychologically healing. We also like to call it "gothic surf guitar," even though it's technically played on bass.

Odysseus just wanted to get home. Eventually, he made it. His loyal dog, Argus, waited twenty years to see his master, and when he finally did, he died from happiness. There was a further spot of bother with his wife's suitors, but, finally, it all worked out, and the concluding chapter of "The Odyssey" is titled, "Peace."

The loyalty of Argus is represented by a musical theme in the track of the same name that recurs throughout the album in various forms, finally culminating in the penultimate track, "Odysseus." The album's conclusion, "Ancient Evenings," represents lasting reconciliation.

The piccolo bass was innovated by jazz fusion musician Stanley Clarke; it's a bass with higher pitched strings, so the instrument is tuned an octave higher than a regular bass guitar, or an octave lower than a typical electric guitar (it's in the same range as a baritone guitar, though with fewer strings). The sound is similar to the low-pitched twang heard in 60s surf guitar, spaghetti westerns, and the James Bond theme, but HB3 has expanded the vocabulary of the instrument to unexpected expressive and emotive heights: "I hear a few different styles including classical, folk, East Indian and rock. The playing is dynamic and enthralling and quite beautiful at times, displaying some gorgeous melodies along the way.” –Sea of Tranquility.

about

HB3 Los Angeles, California

"It's rare to come across a recording that's wholly original. HB3 achieves this not by fearing or shunning his influences, but by embracing them wholeheartedly and using them to lovingly create new ideas with old phrases. HB3 takes all of these musical ideas that have entered his mind over the years and resets them as something wholly new and original." ... more
